Generational Trauma Healing: The Code You Didn’t Choose

You did not arrive in this world as a blank page.
This is the starting point of generational trauma healing understanding that you inherit far more than eye colour and cheekbones from your ancestors.
Science has been gradually confirming what many of us have felt in our bones for years. We inherit our ancestors stress responses, their survival strategies and their unprocessed fear.
Epigenetics is the study of how our environment shapes our genes and has shown us that the experiences of previous generations leave biological imprints on the nervous system. Not as memory but as code. Like a set of instructions your body received before you ever took your first breath or anyone even knew your name.
Which means the anxiety you cannot explain has a root. The way you tense up ready for impact as you enter a room that by all accounts is perfectly safe has a root. That feeling of living in lack and scarcity even when your bank account tells a different story – that has a root too.
And here is what most personal development work completely misses

You cannot journal your way out of a nervous system that was wired for danger before you were born. You cannot positive-affirmation your way past an energetic imprint that lives in your biology.
This is not a flaw in you. It’s how nature designed us which when you understand why is actually absolute genius.
Because the nervous system of a developing baby is incredibly sensitive to its environment, not just the womb, but the emotional landscape of the mother, the stress in the family system, the unresolved grief from three generations back. Nature, in its extraordinary intelligence, was preparing you to survive the world you were about to enter. It was just giving you a head start.
The problem is that the world changed. You grew up, moved cities, built a career, created a different life entirely. But the code did not automatically update.
So you walk into a boardroom carrying your great-grandmother’s scarcity story. You navigate a relationship with your grandmother’s stoic silence. You parent your children from a nervous system that is still poised for a threat that ended decades before you were born.
And no amount of willpower changes this because willpower lives in the conscious mind. This code lives somewhere much deeper locked in place with survival instincts.
What Generational Trauma Healing Actually Requires
Growth, real growth, is not just about adding new things.

It is about becoming curious, not critical, about the patterns that keep showing up, and asking:
- So which generation did this start with?
- What were they surviving?
- And do I still need this to survive?
This is the work I am stepping into in a new way this autumn, alongside Maria, a fellow Metaphysical Anatomy practitioner who has spent years mapping exactly this terrain. We are bringing it together in a way I have never seen done before.
